You Really Do Need to Have a Good Host!
November 10, 2008 5:11 pm Random ReviewsI know I’ve blogged about this before, but in the last week or two I’ve really had it confirmed that you really really need to have a good web host!
I have a client that I was working with that signed up for hosting with a company I won’t name right now. This was the most confusing hosting platform that I’ve ever seen! All I was trying to do was help her to set up a blog, and there was no easy way to do it! In the end the only way we found was to use their own version of WordPress, which had limited functionality! Talk about messed up!
I immediately had her switch hosts, and things are starting to work out a whole lot better since then.
So seriously, make sure you check out the different hosts out there before you just sign up for somebody. Unfortunately, I think that’s what this lady did. She just picked one because they had a good domain name deal.
This is just one example of why it’s good to check out sites with web hosting reviews before you just go sign up because of a good domain name price. There is so much more to it than just a domain name!
So check out these guys, WebHostingGeeks.com and see if the host you have is one of the most recommended web hosts. They even have it broken down by best for different purposes. For example, they have a different recommendation for just a website host than they do for a blog host.
So check it out!

I never buy a hosting plan with a domain name deal. I always register my domain names some where else. I will have a look at WebHostingGeeks.com
and see what they have got.

I’ve done that several times as well, but lately I just buy the name at the same place I do the hosting.

Your article was very persuasive, and I did check them out. Do you have a specific host in mind for hosting a small business owners website? I own a small truck dealership and need a no hassle web host. I am a beginner, so nothing technical. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I’m currently using GoDaddy, and a lot of people I know use Bluehost.

People learn about hosting and its features after getting some experience.
When launching first site, people do not read the features, they just want their website to be launched.
Later they look at all these features.

yeah, when you’re first getting started keep it simple!

If you are newbie user then it’s a really pain to find good hosting company. The best is to look first at review sites like the one you mentioned in the post.

I agree. I’m actually glad that there are sites like this to make it easier for all of us!

It is indeed important to check the reliability of webhosting company that you will use especially if you are novice in website building. The best way is to ask fellow webmasters/bloggers about their recommendations based on their own experience.

That is a good tip. Have you gotten any advice from doing that that you can share?

I use 1and1 shared hosting. I have a Linux hosting package and a windows ASP.NET hosting package. The only complaint I have with them is their restrictions in the windows hosting package. Several features available in ASP.NET 2.0 are not available. Other than that, really good hosting company, especially if you are using WordPress or Drupal.

I tried to help someone set up some 1&1 hosting before and I thought their hosting was a MESS

I currently use Yahoo webhosting. It’s a little more expensive than other hosting services, but it’s reliable. The only problem I have is that my site is built on Wordpress and Yahoo does not automatically upgrade to the newest version.

Most hosts don’t do an automatic upgrade if you have it hosted through them. You still have to go through and do that yourself.

yeah a good if not great host is needed specially in hosting your blog because every second counts. .if your host is always down then you will loose traffic..

That’s for sure! If that happens it’s time to switch hosts!

I always buy a domain name from one site and then host with a different company. The host I’m with now is very good and has had no down time since I’ve been with them.

Would you be willing to share who you’re with?

i believe that u r right, for beginners it’s so easy to get a host, but for pro, they try hard to look for the best
i recommend to check the most updated web host directory

How do you think this site compares with the one I put in this post?
[Reply]
Hey! How much do you think one should pay for a reliable hosting? I pay some $7-8 a month to host my blog, and the results seem to be alright, but perhaps you have a different suggestion?

That’s all I pay!

Blogs need to database so you should find hosting plan that includes a database. If you need only one blog to submit, you need only one database,so the smallest plan of Netfirms.com could be suitable for you.60 USD per year.

It is my understanding that some hosting companies are not compatable with blogs. Hard to believe with the popularity of blogs today, but before choosing a hosting company make sure that they do host blogs.

Just make sure you get Linux hosting and you should be fine

I had a problem like this when I first bought a personal domain. Not knowing a lot about hosting, I read hosting reviews but I got it wrong; so I bought a cheap one but not very stable. Which was bad. After few weeks in which my site was up 1 day and down another 2 I decided to ask for help to a friend. He gave me hosting on his server, free of charge now - only on I;ll get a lot of traffic I will give him a link :). Good exchange for both of us. As I do not have time to work on this personal site, probably I had a better deal than him.

That’s cool that you have a friend that can help you out like that!

Very true..I know some people hate GoDaddy, while others love it..I haven’t had much problem with them yet, but have considered a switch to Hostgator.

I use them as well and really haven’t had many (if any) problems, but have also considered switching. My biggest issue with GoDaddy is their advertising. I find it incredibly annoying…

+Avoid shared hosting if you can. Find anyone who offers “managed hosting” - this is where they have their own dedicated servers and hosting is done in a much more controlled way than the “pile ‘em high” way of shared hosting (which invariably means downtime, slow page loads etc).

I think for people getting started shared hosting is fine, but eventually you’ll probably have to make that switch.

Mines not on the list, and for good reason. They are completely unreliable. my sites have been up and down almost constantly for a while now, costing me tons of money!

Have you considered switching to something better?
[Reply]
I think its a best practice to buy your domain and hosting separately. So you are not tied to one company and can have the ability to see which hosting companies are better.

Not a bad strategy. I have people do that when they are working with a site-building program. But if I’m just doing regular hosting I usually get it at the same place because they usually give you deal. And hey, you can always transfer it if you need to
[Reply]
I use HostGator. i have to say i’m happy their service, but i have never used a different host anyway.

For a business online, a good host is essential. We are a B2B online marketplace for used computers, so if or server is down, our business is dead - which is really bad. I think a good host is the best choice you could make when you start an online business.

I agree. There’s nothing more frustrating than having your site go down all of the time!

You’re completely right, these guys look good. I’ve been at Lunarpages a good while though, and until they screw up I’ll stick with them.
One time they actually banned me from accessing any of my websites “on accident.” Their tech support is horrible to work with.
Other than that, though, I’ve got nothing but good words for them.

yeah…being banned from your own site admin is a bit of a problem

We use hostgator servers. They seem relible and reasonably priced.
But one point. They have 50000 users online limit. Which can be told as you can get up to 50000 users online at the same time.

Since 2005,I have been using Netfirms Hosting, although I am Turkish and Netfirms Hosting is in Canada and USA. In my opinion,Netfirms is really good Hosting but it is too difficult to solve some problems.

These are very good but they are US hosting companies. Some don’t offer .co.uk extension and also I need my blogs to be hosted in UK.
