The Sunday Funnies Aren’t So Funny Anymore
December 4, 2007 4:03 pm Random Observations
I must be in a very nostalgic mood or something… I was thinking just the other day about how on Sundays we would always try to be the first one to get the paper so that we could read over the funnies. It was by far the most fought over section of the Sunday paper. Granted, I didn’t get half of the jokes, but they were still funny most of the time.
Just the other day I was looking over the funnies when I was at my parents house for a visit. They just aren’t the same as they used to be. I honestly think that most of the comics have gone down-hill. (I’m sure Garfield had his golden days, but I don’t think cats should live that long…) What happened to the classics like The Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes? Those comics were great! I honestly can’t think of one these days that even comes close.
Here are some of my favorites from the good old days (some of these might still be around, I just think the quality has gone down):
- The Far Side
- Calvin & Hobbes
- Foxtrot
- B.C.
- Dilbert
Well, there’s always hope for the future I guess!

I went through a 5 or 6 year comic withdrawal before finding a few good ones around the web.
Maybe they’re more pointed at my IT side, but great nonetheless. It’s pretty easy to find targeted comics these days

My kids love Calvin & Hobbes. But you are right, they don’t find them in the Sunday funnies. They buy or borrow Calvin & Hobbes books (thick hardback books made up of Calvin & Hobbes comic strips).

I have noticed that comics these days are…simply…terrible. They are not funny and are not entertaining. It is sad quite frankly. Go Calvin and Hobbes!

Look at the merry go round of nostalgia in movies of the last few years. Dukes of Hazard, Charlies Angels et al…great humour in the comics section will return!
If not I will eat my hat and draw the repercussions for publication!

I think Dean makes a good point. The one problem with all the remakes is that they add the wrong kind of humor. This sort of ruins the purity of the original.

My Sunday favorite is Dilbert. Somehow, I can associate the cartoon with my workplace and it always never fail to give me a good laugh

Calvin and Hobbes has always been my favorite cartoon! Actually stopped reading the Sunday Funnies many years ago when Calvin and Hobbs stopped. I do still have all the books though

i understand what you mean. not sure if you kept up with lisa’s story in Funky Winkerbean. she died of cancer. i check out ‘the daily cartoonist’ every few days to see what’s going on. dilbert will always be funny, it’s so close to what goes on in the real world. i don’t subscribe to the paper anymore (i read everything online). i do subscribe to a handful of comics through e-mail. pearls before swing and baby blues are two of my favoties. sorry for the long response

Kids don’t read anymore. What do you expect? I own every C&H book and most Far Sides.

Quite right - I just bought the Calvin & Hobbes ‘box set’ as a present (ahem, for my parents) for xmas. It weighs a ton but full of priceless wit and wisdom!

This may be a stretch, but how about Garfield? Weren’t there like 20 of them all shaped horizontally long - remember those?

Calvin is my personal adviser. I am still not sure how far I will get in life with him advising me, but it got me through High School.
