The Joys of Not Watching TV!
May 21, 2008 7:40 am Movies, TV and Music
So when my wife and I moved into our new place back in August, we quickly found out that the company that was supposed to connect us with cable was in no rush to actually do it. We even followed up with them a couple of times but were never able to get a hold of someone. So instead of complaining, we decided to just not worry about it and try life without TV.
And you know what, it’s actually been great! So I haven’t really watched TV for several months now and I have to admit that I don’t really miss it. We’ll keep up on some of the shows that we like either by renting the season on DVD or watching it online. For example, I love the show Lost, and we’ve kept up on it by watching it online.
If you’ve never tried going without TV, you should give it a try. Honestly, whenever I watch TV now I’m amazed at the kind of stuff they can show on TV. I was probably just desensitized to it before…

I really don’t watch all that much TV anymore, and I think my life is the better for it.

It’s funny how that works. I recently cut out television in order to make time for other more important things in life and I really don’t miss it at all. As a result, I’m getting more things done and feel like I’m really getting more out of life. It’s actually quite incredible to experience…

Very true… ever thought about how much time of our lives we waste in front of the TV?

Yes, I completely agree with you. I experienced that also, even up to now. I haven’t watch TV and it feels so good. I’m already used not to watch and I’m not missing it also.

I lived in an apartment with a few guys for about a year, and we didn’t have a place for a TV. We kept one in the closet, and it’s wonder how little it got pulled out and used.
That year ended up being one of the best years of my life. So much time! I read books I never would have read, and the experience truly changed me.

I tried it once. It was great. But I would not skip it during NBA playoffs. Good point though. Quality of time spent with others is better without TV.

I hardly watch TV! Much better for ya that way :P.

I am a DVD person, I am not a TV person, besides TV shows are boring

We’re very low-use TV viewers and it’s great. Especially with kids, not having the boob-tube going all day is a huge benefit to them.

Yeah.. I don’t watch TV anymore. The only use for TV is to watch the news daily and some sports =/ All which can be done from free channels. No cable required. By downloading I can choose when I want to watch them as well =P The power of the internet.

I must agree that TV has become crap. There is so much nonsense these people show, it can clutter your mind with all the negatives in this world. I gave up watching TV ages back. I only watch my fav games once in a while and movies which I rent.
I have a feeling (not sure how many of you will agree) - TV is for women. Just look at the show s they put on TV. They are all women centered. If anyone is reading this comment, let me know if you agree or disagree.

I used to be a tv addict but ever since we had internet I found out that I can actually live without tv - most of the time, anyway. Now we are debating whether we’ll go all the way and cut our subscription. Haven’t decided though…

I’m with you on this one. My wife and I have also recently turned off the tv and have been spending more time reading and doing other activities together like taking walks after dinner. Our relationship has been much stronger for it.

I actually stopped watching NEWS and Entertainment Channels a year back just to be in control of what goes into my head.

For me, TV is outdated.I am more towards online, DVD, CD type..Not all the time but TV stations are getting boring..

Nowadays, people can live without tv as long as they have a laptop or desktop in their house.Especially those with internet connection.

I used to be a tv addict as well. Today i’m more of an internet addict, living for a week without it was pretty boring, though it helped me to get into other hobbies like reading. I still cannot go a day without watching the local news though.

I watch a lot less TV than I used to before, and it’s definitely nice. But I will always love television, some of it is just so interesting and funny.

We went without cable for almost two years when both our kids were in middle school / high school and it was one of the greatest times in our family’s life. We spent more time together, we had to find other ways to entertain ourselves and other things to talk about besides what we watched on tv. Enjoy the time together and when you think about it…you’re really not missing much!

Yeah, I’ve also went a couple years before without cable TV and didn’t miss it at all. However, if I didn’t have internet service, it wouldn’t have been as easy. Ahh, the joys of not watching TV.

TV was never great to start with. The internet is where the present and the future is.

Good job staying away from TV. It’s amazing how much other things you can get done. And watching shows online is the way to go, because it isn’t just aimless channel surfing so you only watch what you want.
