Halloween is a Dumb Holiday

Ok ok, I know that its a little early for this, but honestly I think that Halloween is a dumb holiday.  For some reason I was thinking about it today so I thought I’d write about it.

I thought it was kinda cool when I was a kid, but that was just because of all the free candy. That’s it, nothing more.

My real problem with Halloween is this: when did it become a ’sexy’ holiday?  I mean seriously.  I thought it was all about kids dressing up like little ghosts and witches and stuff.  But I think the movie Mean Girls said it best when one of the girls says, “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.”  Sadly that is what this holiday has become.

For example, there’s this website called Costume Cauldron, and one of their keywords on their home page is ‘Sexy Adults.’  Even they are promoting the new sexy Halloween. Then on the home page some of the costumes that come up are ’sexy vixen pirate wench’ and ’sexy eskimo cutie.’  This is just retarded…

One thing I will say for Halloween though is that if you keep it for the kids, it still is a lot of fun.  Last year we took my son around as a monkey and he was totally cute. Toddler Halloween costumes are really cute, just because they are all about the fun of the holiday, not the bad side of it.

Needless to say, I would be totally happy if they didn’t have this holiday at all.  And sites like Costume Cauldron honestly annoy me.  But in the end, my kid loved it.  So for the time being I will still probably be involved to some degree in Halloween, just for my kids sake.  So I guess in the end there is still a need for these kinds of companies and sites.  But really, can we stop with the ’sexiness’ of Halloween already?

Maybe I’ll Actually Send Photo Cards This Year

PhotocardI know it’s a little early to be thinking about this, but I came across a site today that does photo cards. My wife and I have never sent one of these out for any reason. I know that they are a very popular thing to do around Christmas, in fact we get several every year from people we know. But we’ve never done one!

The cool thing about these cards is how customizable they are. You can change what the outside of the card says, what the inside says, and use your own image. It’s a great way to send out some Christmas greetings, wedding invitations, and a number of other things, too.

By the way, the site I’m talking about is CardsDirect.com. They have a great selection of designs and styles, and if you don’t like the regular photo card idea you can also just get ones that allow you to slip your photo into a frame card. Personally though, I’d rather go with the full on photo card. I think they look a lot better!

I think the key is to have a cool picture. Too many of the cards I get from other people just have the family smiling at the camera. What if instead it was a picture of the family skiing, or bungee jumping, or something else original. I think that if I was to do a card like this it would have to reflect my family’s unique personality.

What’s Up With the Easter Bunny Anyway?

Easter Bunny by Scott Kinmartin, FlickrI have to admit that ever since I found out that Santa, the Easter Bunny, and all the other characters we are led to believe in aren’t real, I was always most curious about the bunny. I mean c’mon…a bunny that lays eggs? Seems a little weird.

Or maybe what really happens is that the Easter Bunny steals the eggs from the Thanksgiving Turkey and hoards them until Easter. Maybe it’s some long standing vendetta they have against each other. Who knows.

Honestly though, who came up with the whole Easter Bunny idea? I mean, when you look at some of the other characters like Santa, they at least somewhat make sense. Even from a religious standpoint you can kinda see where Santa comes from, especially when you think of him as Saint Nicholas. But the Easter Bunny? What does a psycho egg laying bunny rabbit have to do with what Easter is really all about - the Resurrection of Jesus Christ?

It’s official…this one has me baffled. Any ideas?
