Wow, I can’t believe that today is already the first day of October! A good sign that the holiday season is coming is that last night my wife picked up a Halloween costume for our 2 year old.
Have you ever sent out holiday photo cards before? Honestly, I’ve never been one to do it, but I know that a lot of families do. In fact, each year my wife and i talk about doing it, so maybe this will be the year that we’ll actually get around to doing it for real!
Well, the good thing is that there are plenty of services online that can help you get this sort of thing done. One of those services is VistaPrint. And right now VistaPrint is having a sale so you can get your holiday photo cards done early this year!
The deal is that they are offering 10 free holiday cards. All you have to do is use the code XmasFree at checkout and you’ll get the discount.
Just as a side note, they have a lot of other deals going on right now, too. You can get discounts on a lot of their business printing services such as car door magnets, t-shirts, and anything else. So check them out!

So I find it kinda crazy how every year around this time all these little stands show up to sell fireworks. I think the thing that I wonder the most is, “Who are these people that do these stands? Is this their only business and does it pay them enough to not have to work the rest of the year?”
I have to admit, that would be a pretty sweet deal if that’s the only thing that they did all year. I have a hard time believing that’s the case, but wouldn’t that be great? Only working for a few weeks before the 4th of July (and the 24th here in Utah, we do a lot of fireworks for Pioneer Day)?
Honestly though, I haven’t bought fireworks in years. The last couple of years we’ve always done our 4th celebrations at another family member’s house, and they have provided the fireworks. This year I’ll be on vacation at that time and I really don’t want to lug fireworks around. But they sure are fun to watch!

Well, thankfully it’s time for another vacation this coming weekend. Every year my wife’s family goes up to Bear Lake, Utah for a weekend, and it just so happens that this year we’re going over the 4th of July weekend. I’m hoping that there will be some sweet fireworks over the lake or something like that.
If you’ve never been to Bear Lake it’s pretty cool. It’s a lake that is part in Utah, part in Idaho. And the really neat thing about it is the color of blue that it is. Most lakes in Utah are kind of a dirty green color, but for some reason Bear Lake has a really nice blue color to it, almost like the ocean…but not salty!
This year should be interesting because now we have 2 kids. It was interesting with 1…I guess we’ll see how it goes!

So Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday, and I still have no idea what I’m going to get my wife, my mom, or my mother-in-law! I’m really bad at coming up with ideas for this sort of thing, and I’m always afraid that I’m going to just do something lame.
In fact, I remember one year as a kid when I totally forgot to get my Mom something. So the moment arrived and I reached in my pocket and gave her a string. It has been a running joke in my family for years that I gave my Mom a string rather than a real gift…
So this year I need to come up with some better ideas. It looks like 1800Flowers.com has some really good ideas, and I know that my wife and Mom like flowers, so maybe I’ll just do one of their gifts. If you’re in the same bind as me, check them out. You might get some good ideas!
Has anyone else noticed that Mother’s Day is always a much bigger deal that Father’s Day?

So its that time of year again…the time when everyone starts to set their New Year’s Resolutions. I certainly hope that everyone isn’t setting the same ones that they set last year…
Here’s my thought on New Year’s Resolutions: its a great idea, but a year is a long time to focus on one goal. So here’s the approach that I’m thinking about taking this year. Rather than setting a ‘goal’ for the year, I’m going to set more of a ‘theme’. Then, I can break the year up into 2-3 month chunks and focus on the more short term goals that will help me to achieve a larger goal.
I’ve just learned that when I set a goal for the year, I tend to lose interest after a few months (can anyone else relate to this
). I still haven’t decided what the goals or themes are going to be yet, but they will probably focus around something physical, spiritual, relationship, etc.
Happy New Year!

So I hear that a lot of stores out there aren’t allowing their employees to say “Merry Christmas” to their customers because they might offend someone that isn’t Christian or it just isn’t politically correct. I know that this has been going on for a number of years, but I didn’t have this blog before now so I can finally speak my opinion on it.
This is ridiculous. I’m seriously so sick of this stupid “politically correct” stuff. Is every one out there just waiting to be offended so they can whine about it? If someone walked up to me and said “Happy Hannukah” would I get all offended and start to cry that I’m not Jewish, so why would someone wish me a happy Jewish holiday? NO! I’d just be polite and say “Thanks, same to you!”
I just don’t understand the whole thing. Historically and currently we have been a predominantly Christian nation, that’s why we take Christmas as a Federal Holiday. If I lived in the Middle East I would expect they do the same thing for their religious holidays. Same thing if I was in China or Japan. But for some reason here in the US we have to try to appease every single person that walks through our doors. So when does this mean that we lose our own identity?
Is anyone else with me on this? If so, I hope you’ll happily wish everyone you see a Merry Christmas and not worry about them getting offended. That’s their choice, and most people wouldn’t be offended anyway.

I know that I’m a little late on this one, but I had an idea about a month ago and I’m going to have to pull it off in the next year or two.
I am officially sick of always eating the same thing at Thanksgiving. Yes, it’s good and I really do like the turkey and mashed potatoes, I just think that Thanksgiving could use some variety! So what I’m going to do every now and then in the coming years is have a 100% Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner. One year maybe I’ll go Japanese and have a lot of sushi and other Japanese style dishes. Maybe it will be all Italian food, just a bunch of different pastas and such. But the idea would be to have a Thanksgiving dinner that is based on other nations’ foods.
Ha, here’s an idea: an all microwave TV dinner Thanksgiving! Ok, probably not a great idea on that one…
So who’s with me?! If you have any other ideas for a great Non-Traditional Thanksgiving feel free to share it!
