Should You Save Your Baby’s Cord Blood?

8:25 am Just Random!

So I’ve seen or heard of this idea a couple of times in the last couple of years, especially in the news and other things.  But I’ve honestly never really looked into it.  It does seem pretty interesting though!

So why would you want to save your baby’s cord blood?  What good does it really do?  Well, what it can be used for is later in life if your kid develops a disease like leukemia, cerebral palsy, anemia, lymphoma, or diabetes.  They can use the cord blood and stem cells to help them fight off these and other problems.  Pretty crazy!

But of course, not all of these blood blood banks are created equally.  One that looks really good is Cryo-cell. They’ve been around since 1992 and have already helped over 175,000 families to save cord blood samples.

Their simple challenge is this: compare us! In other words, compare them with a lot of the other cord blood banks out there.

Here are 5 things to consider when choosing a cord blood bank: cost (what value do you get), security, financial stability (will they be around long term), certification, and expert industry leadership.

Cryo-Cell stands out in all 5 of these categories and are worth checking out if you are going to be having any kinds soon. You can check out their current offer at their website and learn more about what they can do for you!

I’m currently considering signing up with Cryo-Cell. My wife is 4-months pregnant and I think it might be a good idea to insure our kid’s health in some way. I’m just not sure if it’s worth the price…

This is a good idea, but can these places be trusted? Also, this is pretty pricey, about $5,000+ for the average cost. What I want to know is where are their facilities and who tests them for standards. This is information that should be on or close to their homepage. Regards!

We recently had a baby, and went through the same process of should we save the cord blood or not. We got many adds from Hypnoberthing classes, doctors and just in the mail telling us the reasons why to save cord blood. At first we were sure we wanted to save our babies cord blood, however after doing some investigating we decided not to save our babies cord blood. The main reason was the high price of saving the cord blood and the low amount of problems that cord blood can help. Also saveing cord blood is not yet to the point were it can be saved for long, I think it is only about 20 years and most of the problems happen well into adulthood.

this all seems odd. but i suppose if it save lives, why wouldn’t you do it? oh, yeh - coz it costs lots of money. i live in england the whole idea of spending money on healthcare is alien to me. or rather us as a nation, we choose to complain a lot and then die of treatable diseases.

This is a hard thing to decided. My husband and I decided to save our babies cord blood because if by a change our little one will get something we want to have that safety of having the cord blood.

Before my son was born, my husband and I were interested in banking his cord blood. However, we found out from the hospital that they require the parents to do all the work ahead of time getting the materials to preserve and/or submit the blood!

Needless to say, we missed our opportunity. Ah, the beauty of living in the middle of nowhere (Alaska)! lol

this is really strange. the thought just every crossed my mind. only humans would THINK to do stuff like this let alone go through all the trouble of doing it. i agree with stem cell research and all the good it could do the world. i guess this is just another kinda step towards making that more common. thanks for the interesting read.

We’ve been discussing it, but my husband disagrees vehemently.

I’ll keep plugging away, trying to change his mind, as it’s something I think we should do.

I am worried about the price, though

Saving cord blood is a hard choice to make. We just had a baby and I recommend that you do a lot of research and choice what is best for your family. I would not go off what people say but put in the time and do the research for yourself.

Isn’t one problem with saving cord blood that the companies don’t have a good mechanism for keeping the blood for long periods of time? Freezing processes cause cells to rupture and become unuseable over time. We may have to wait for a stem cell breakthrough to reap the benefits of growing new organs, blood etc.
