Remembering 9/11 - The 7 Year Anniversary

7:51 am Random Thoughts

Remembering 9-11 7 years later Photo # 12 by happyarm, FlickrSeven years ago, 9/11/01, is a day that I think few of us will ever forget.  It’s one of those days where everyone can remember where they were and what they were doing.

As for myself, I was actually living in South America at the time (Chile to be exact).  I was serving as a missionary for my church and we were headed to a meeting with some other missionaries.  On the bus a Chilean told us something about tornados and airplanes crashing into buildings, but we didn’t know what he was talking about.  I do remember at the bus stop seeing people watching a TV with a burning building on it, but I had no idea what it was.

So we get to our meeting and the janitor asks us what we are doing there, that we should be in our apartments.  We didn’t know why.  Then he hooked up a TV and showed us.  I remember all of us just watching with a blank stare, not sure what to think or do.  One of the guys with us was actually from New York City.  We found out later that some of his father’s friends were killed that day.

One of the really scary things about being in Chile during that time is that 9/11 is already a bad day there.  9/11 is the day that Pinochet took over.  If you know anything about Chilean history, he was dictator for a long time, and we helped to put him there.  So it’s not exactly a day when a lot of people are friendly to Americans.  So needless to say, we stayed in our apartments for about 2 days without leaving, wondering if we were going to have to flee the country.

It was a scary time to say the least.  But I also remember walking down the street a few days later and a man that I had never met walked up and asked us if we were all right, and offered his deepest sympathies for what was happening.

That day changed all of us I think.  For me, it gave me a renewed pride in our country for the way we pulled together to get through it.  It also opened my eyes to the fact that there really are people who don’t like us.  Whether out of actual hate or ignorance.

On this 7 year anniversary of 9/11, I think it’s important for all of us to remember that day.  It was tragic, and it changed us…for the best I hope!

I live in Ireland and I remember where I was this day. It’s really had an impact on all of the world. I saw a documentary on it about the firemen who happened to be filmed when it all happened. It was shocking stuff. You’d be traumatised for life after seeing something like that!

I still sweat everytime I see those images.

The scary part is that those who ask some hard questions about this event are demonized as being “unpatriotic.”

My big question is this: How did all THREE WTC buildings collapse in a completely symmetrical fashion? Don’t strutures that fail usually twist and fall over? Why did the third building fall?

Why were large amounts of exceptionally hot molten metal found under all THREE buildings?

I was unaware of the political climate in Chile, I agree, it was not a good place for you to be at the time. How nice that a local approached with sympathy, though.

It’s a day that will remain burned in my memory forever.
