Does anyone else think that pearls are just cool? I mean diamonds are nice and all, but when you think about the way pearls look and how they’re made, you have to admit that they are pretty unique. A few years ago we bought my wife a pearl ring and she wears it all of the time!

I love pearls! When I was young, we’d go on these vacations and there would be little places to stop on the side of the road with pearl oysters. You’d pay like five dollars or something and fish out an oyster and the employee would shuck it open and you’d see if you had a pearl. I used to adore it!

A pearl is a hard object produced within the soft tissue of a living shelled mollusk. Just like the shell of a mollusk, a pearl is made up of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes of pearls occur. The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries, and because of this, the word pearl has become a metaphor for something very rare, fine, admirable, and valuable.
Anyway… The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild, but they are extremely rare. These wild pearls are referred to as natural pearls. Cultured or farmed pearls from pearl oysters and freshwater mussels make up the majority of those that are currently sold. Imitation or fake pearls are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry, but the quality of their iridescence is usually very poor, and generally speaking, artificial pearls are easily distinguished from genuine pearls.

I guess it all depends on the woman’s taste. I bought my wife a pearl necklace and earrings last year. At first she didn’t think she wanted pearls until I gave them to her. Now she wears them all the time.
