Optional Body Parts?

10:46 am Random Thoughts

Do you ever wonder why we even have certain things in our body?  Namely things like tonsils, appendix, and gallbladder that you can do without just fine.  I think it is very interesting that we even have these things!

This week my wife found out that she has to have her gallbladder removed.  She has been having some problems with it ever since our last kid was born a month ago.  So they did some tests on it and decided that it needed to go.

I guess my big question is that if we don’t really need some of these things, why don’t we just take them out once you turn 6 or something?  Ok, I know I know, the healthcare costs and all that.  But wouldn’t it be cheaper to just do it then rather than wait until your appendix explodes and almost kills you?

Ok, if you can’t tell I’m mainly just kidding with this.  But you have to admit that it is interesting that we can take things out and still function just fine.  I guess it goes to show that the human body is one amazing thing!

I agree, the human body is an amazing thing-but are you saying that it is amazing because it can get along just fine without some of its parts, or because we have parts we don’t really need?
Anyway, good luck to your wife on her gallbladder surgery.

Having had a few body parts removed I can agree that you can get by without tonsils and other things - but most of them are there to serve a purpose - so if you can keep them do.

You’re right! Human body is amazing.. I have a friend also who’s tonsils was removed las week.
Those body parts that you have mentioned are not really important but if they are not functioning well, it will cause trouble to our health.
    Good luck to your wife!

Well the appendix has a function: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermiform_appendix#Function
tonsils are a part of immune system as well, so they’re not completely useless.
And gallbladder should be super important since it produces bile. I never knew you could just remove it… So everything has a purpose, which is kinda funny as well :)

I read somewhere once that the appendix is what remains of the second stomach our very early ancestors used for processing plant edibles, and when we switched to mostly eating meat, this second stomach simply grew smaller into no use.

I wish my family would have taken out my appendix when I was born or soon after. When I was 19 it burst and caused huge complications. It was a messy situation. Fun blog!
