Mouse Flavored Cat Food?
March 13, 2008 6:49 am Random Observations
I heard something on the radio the other day that really made me laugh. It was just in the background, but here’s the question that was asked:
“Why don’t we have mouse flavored cat food?”
Seriously! Who decided that cats like the flavors that are currently in cat food? What about bird flavor? I remember growing up our cat would always kill and eat (at least partially) birds, mice, and other rodents. So why don’t you see these flavors in cat food?
I just went to the Friskies Cat Food website and here are some of the flavors that they have: Seafood Sensations, Indoor Delights (Poultry), Feline Favorites (Poultry, Milk, and Seafood), Signature Blend (Poultry, Beef, and Seafood). I don’t know about you, but I can’t image a cat in the wild killing a chicken, cow, or catching a crab. I think we’re trying a little too hard to domesticate our pets. Next you’ll have the flavors fillet mignon, banana creme pie, and nachos (that would be my favorite if I was a cat
).
Who knows, but maybe cats in the wild roamed as packs and would take out a cow kinda like a group of piranhas would. If that’s the case, then maybe its a good thing that we’ve domesticated cats…and we can thank companies like Friskies for keeping their primal needs fed.

I think the flavors for cat food are mostly for the humans rather than the cats. I think the cats wouldnt really care about the spiffy title of their cat food - they just want the food! Humans however… especially those who are really cat lovers, just want the best for their furry friends. And “seafood sensations” sounds much more glamorous than “dead mouse.”

Thats got to be one of the greatest thoughts I will have all day. Its funny how we humans envision what we think animals like, when its really just to the liking of other humans.

Mouse flavored cat food? Hey, who knows…maybe there are some dead mice in there; they seem to put everything else in dog & cat food! You should see some of the stuff (including rotten meat) that some brands use to make this crap.

dude I couldn’t agree with you more. why don’t we have mouse flavored cat food. What will we call it, here’s a few:
“Mousey Snacks”
“Kibblies-n-mouse”
“Rat Pack Snack”
“Kit-Kat Rat Snack”

How about cat flavored mouse food? Lets turn the tables. Hmm wait, yes there are actually people that have mice as pets.

I’d have to agree with the first poster. Pets are an extension to the humans that own them. The fancy packaging and marketing campaigns aren’t for the pets. That being said, I do and try to detect whether my cat prefers a certain flavor over another and I swear that he does have a favorite. So even though I know that there is probably no discernible difference, I’m able to fool myself into thinking otherwise. So I think this pet marketing works pretty well.

Yes the marketing agency guy is right. I wouldn’t buy “dead mouse” flavoured cat food and neither would a lot of other people. It’s just marketting strategies I guess. “seafood sensations” is probably gonna sell alot more so they use it =/

Over here we have chicken provencale flavour. My cat doesn’t like it; he prefers his meat raw without the spices and herbs.

haha yeah I agree with you that question really made me laugh =D.. anyway I was thinking if they will add a mice or a bird flavor they will kill those first to have it added to cat’s food as the main ingredients, and I find it really yucky.. =/

Not being a cat lover, I think cat flavoured dog food would be great.
I know of a couple of cats I would like to have processed.LOL

Hehe, what dogs should have then? Grass flavoured food?

My guess is that cats like the thrill of hunting and then killing. I really dont think they would like mouse flavor cat food.

My cat is an indoor cat and has never set foot outside, so she doesn’t know what mice and birds taste like. But I don’t think she’s missing out on anything. But it would be cool for companies to experiment. It might lead to the best selling cat food brand ever…!

Just love it - whatever next?
How about Cheese and Mouse Crisps?

Mouse flavored cat food? LOL that’s pretty funny… If I gave my cats mouse flavored cat food, I don’t think they’ll ever eat anything else again…

Thats a great idea, but how does a mouse taste?
[Reply]
Lol, my cat is always hungry and doesn’t care what it tastes like.

ahahah!!
Fantastic!!
It would be better if the food could move and let the cat catch it! Would be more realistic…

you know that is a great question. we give them steak flavored and fish flavored. does that mean they don’t really like mice? lol!

I hadn’t put much thought into it, but that makes sense. There needs to be mouse flavored cat food, and then there should also be canary flavored. lol
