I’m Annoyed With Disrespectful Dog Owners

6:48 am Random Gripings

I should probably first say this up front: I’m not really a dog guy.  Sure, they’re fine and all, but I really don’t think I’ll ever own one.  They smell, they make a mess, and generally destroy everything.  I’ve honestly always been more of a cat person.

Now, normally I don’t have a problem with people that own dogs.  But for some reason all of the ones in my condo complex a bunch of disrespectful idiots.

As with most condo complexes, we have sort of a common area with a lot of grass that normally you can play on.  But instead it has become the dog poop zone.  Every morning that’s where all the dog owners go and let their animals do their thing.  And then don’t pick it up!

So can I play with my kids on the grass?  NO!  I’m too worried that they’re going to step in poop, or even worse pick it up!

It’s sort of a new complex, so we don’t really have an HOA yet, but once we do I’m going to be filing some complaints.

So please, if you’re a dog owner, PICK UP YOUR DOG’S CRAP!!!

I’ve seen people do that in my friend’s complexes too. I just think if you are going to own any pet, you should be responsible and clean up after them and take care of them.

I’ve always been nervous to lay on the grass or have picnics because of that very reason! I hope they do get a HOA for you soon. Until then, I’d make a sign and post it.

That’s actually a good idea, but knowing the people around here it would be taken down in like 5 minutes after I posted it.

It’s no secret that America is obsessed with their pets. Giving your canine the best Dog bed money can buy will not only earn you some brownie points and keep your dog very loyal to you, but can also add a fashionable touch to your living room decor.

I love dogs, could never not have a dog. But agree with the whole crap thing completely. The cats thing, naaaa, now they are dirty! LOL

    Great post!

It’s good to hear that some dog owners also think it’s nasty. As for the cats…to each his own!

I love dogs, but this is absolutely spot on, Dan! Here in South Africa, so many of our beautiful beach areas are in such a state that walking barefoot has become a thing of the past. Surely dog owners can take responsibility and just pick up after their dogs? I also hate it if the neighbors send out their big dogs for their daily ‘walk’ - leaving us to do the cleaning up on our lawns.

    Dan Reply:

Wow, that’s pretty bad. It’s seriously a problem all over the place it seems. It’s making me really want to never have a dog!

Dan, you are the man!! I love dogs and cats, but it’s the irresponsible owners that I hate. If you are going to own a pet, be responsible. I live in Chicago and in the city, there really isn’t a park or grass, so when people walk their dogs, they just go to a tree and let their dogs do their business.
I once got into an argument with a lady who was walking her two small dogs. I was watching her let her dogs do their thing and as she just walked away afterwards. I stopped her and told her to pick it up, she argued. The pedestrians followed my lead and with my luck, a police man pulled-up. She picked it up with her scarf and had walked home bitter.
    That was a great day.
Thanks for the post. Sorry it was long.

    Dan Reply:

HAHA!!! That’s awesome! Way to stand up to the lady with the little dogs! My wife and I were at the park the other day with our kids and a guy with big dogs let his dogs do the same thing…but being that he had big dogs and we had little kids we didn’t say anything :). Pretty soon though I’ll have to start because it’s getting ridiculous.

You know, I used to think I was the only one getting pissed off. I know that a lot of dog owners take their dogs for a walk when it gets dark so they don’t have to clean up after their dogs. Kind of sneaky. This is something that does require a city council to post signs with possible fines for the owners of the pets. One dog owner said relax I am going to pick it up. He is missing the point. I don’t want the after smell on my lawn.

    [Reply]

    Dan Reply:

Agreed. It’s really just bad. Ruin your own yard, not someone else’s. And if you live in a condo or appartment, YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE A DOG!!!

Thats the nice thing about cats. they poop “off the beaten path”, and then they bury it. I’m becoming more of a cat person and less of a dog person.

    [Reply]

    Dan Reply:

Yeah, cats are awesome that way. And you can actually train them to go in the litter box and not worry about it. I would say cats are much more responsible that way.

All dog owners and dogs are different. Even though we had a small yorkshire terrier, who left virtually no mess anywhere she went, we still cleaned up after her. We would always know when other people were walking their dogs around our property because the evidence left, would be practically bigger than our dog. Without putting up a fence, there is no practical solution.

    [Reply]

    Dan Reply:

Maybe we should make this a last minute issue in the election. “Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain, what do you propose to do about the growing problem of dog poop in our cities?” LOL

  12. October 25th, 2008 | 9:07 am

I think cats are 10 times grosser than dogs. I’ve watched a cat push around his own mess for 10 minutes. After this he “cleaned” his paws and himself with his tongue. Yikes!

    Dan Reply:

But hey, at least the cat cleaned it up!

This isn’t anything new. Its not the dogs, its the owners. I find it so disrespectful when I watch somebody take out THEIR animal and dont bother picking up after it. You picked it, you wanted it, you clean up after it. ugh.

    [Reply]

    Dan Reply:

AMEN! That’s part of the responsibility of owning an animal. If you didn’t want to clean up after it you shouldn’t have bought it in the first place!

This really really pee’s me off!!

The fact that dog poop can blind you is enough for me to never leave any laying around and I believe it should be fined everytime.

Ok enough ranting…. This is one thing I love about random blogs :) The ability for the owner to rant about important things.

    Thanks,

    Forest.

I live in a ski town in Colorado and if your dog is seen doing its business and you do not pick it up you get a ticket from the city.
Of course we have these handy disposable bags all over town that you can use to pick it up with and this really helps out since you cannot say, I didn’t have a way to pick it up.
You should consider getting some of these bags outside of your condo units. Talk to whoever is in charge.

It’s a shame that people aren’t more respectful and clean up after their pets mess. But it is indeed a reflection on greater societies lack of responsibility for most things.

How sick is this? Try walking into your own front yard and stepping in dog ’stuff’! Where I live there is a dog park not to far away, if you do not want to pick up the mess take your dog there. Or better yet, do not have a dog. It is part of the package, when you get a dog! People do not just let their cats litter box sit there, so why would you let your dogs ’stuff’ just sit there. It is sick!

Cats are not dirty. If that was a cat instead of a dog shi??ing… the cat would have covered it up with soil. I dogs just pee and poo anywhere and walk off. No shame, disgusting. You would hardly ever see a cat peeing or pooing just openly in a park or on the streets

I agree with you and I am a huge dog lover. I am also an owner of two large dogs, but I understand the importance of picking up after my dog. I wish that more pet owners could follow the same rules so that we could take our pets more places. Some people are just plain lazy!! I doubt those same people would pick up their cat liter!

I love dogs, but left to their own devices they can be very annoying. Of course, there’s no sense in getting annoyed with the dog. It’s the owner’s fault for not keeping them under control.
