I Really Need to Work on My Posture
April 8, 2008 11:29 am Random ObservationsI’ve realized that I slouch a lot. And I think that it’s starting to take its toll… So what I’m trying to do right now (right now meaning for the next couple of days or so) is notice when I slouch and try to correct it.
For one, I think I need to raise my monitor or something. I think that is contributing to the problem at least in a small way. I could probably use a more comfortable chair, but I don’t know how much that would really help. And I think I also just need to work on posture when I’m doing other things like driving, walking, etc. Last thing I want to do when I get older is become a hunch back because I hunched over so much!
Any tips on correcting posture? I really don’t want to go to a chiropractor cause I’m not a big believer in what they do. Sure the popping feels good for a minute or two, but does it really do anything long-term? Try getting in a conversation about that with my dad sometime. He’s a doctor so he’ll be very convincing that it doesn’t help a lot.. Anyway, I’m open for ideas!

Get a better chair! I’m having the same problems, especially as I get a little older. Both my ‘computer chair’ at home and at work don’t really give my back the support it needs. You’ll need to spend a few pennies to get something that will do the job properly, but this is important stuff. Nothing makes you feel more vulnerable, more human, than back pain (or weakness).

lie down on ur stomach with your legs joined together. then bring ur hands close to your chest and just as u wud do in case of a push-up, slowly breathe in and raise urself. stay up there to ur comfort, then while breathing out come down slowly. do this for about 4-5 times twice a day. i think it shud help. u shud also analyse the chair on which u r sitting.

I read this slouched in my chair! Yes being aware of doing it and correcting your posture is the right thing to do, make sure your height in your chair is correct, I think a 90 degree angle of your legs is right.
I suffer from a bad back and find its also important to make sure you lift things in the correct manner, most likely how I put my back out in the first place.

Get a better chair. I did and it makes a great difference.
You could probably think about putting some exercise in your daily schedule too. You’ll be surprised what a 5 minutes a day training program can do for your back

Yeah i have the same problem, seems to happen to most people who are on the comp a lot. Do yoga! trust me it helps a lot. Also try to work out your core especially your abs, muscles help straighten your spine automatically.

Posture is a big problem in the new computer age. I had the same problem so I put a phone book under my keyboard. It makes me sit up strait and stop slouching. Those ergonomic computer chairs are quite expensive. The phone book was free!

Good posture is critical to avoid physical back problems later. Keep a eye on your posture. In fact I need to work on it myself because I have my lap top at the edge of the couch while I watch TV. Do sits ups. This helps strengthen your lower back as well as your stomach muscles. My friend bought one of those machines where you hang upside down. I think this is excellent because it stretches your spine out in a straight manner.

Because I have always worked at a desk, my posture is also bad. I try to sit up straight when I am at the computer but I tend to forget, so make a consious effort to remember. Excercising your core muscles is a good solution. Iv’e heard Pilates is very good for that.

Get a work out belt, it will definitely keep your back straight.

When you are standing waiting for a bus or a taxi, stand near the edge of the curb with your toes pointing over the curb.
Put most of the weight on your heels and stand straight up for at least 3 minutes.
If you can do this three or four times per day you will notice your posture improving in less than two months.

I also do exactly the same. i think it’s also the computer that does this to us all. My sugestions that seem to help me is PILATES it works on your core muscles strengthening them so that you are holding yourself better. it also requires a lot of balance which in turn helps posture. Stretch your hip flexors and get a foam roller and use it everyday. Search youtube and you will find videos on how to do both.

Damn, I don’t think I ever sit up straight when I’m on the computer. Actually, arched up like a rooster while on the computer would feel sort of queer or unusual, at least to me. Are really tall or something? Maybe that has something to do with it. You say you need to really work on your posture… I don’t know what to recommend for you personally, other than occasional stretches. Maybe you need to hang on a pull-up bar on occasions, to help keep your back straight and flexible. I use a Power Tower, myself, which is also great for upper body fitness. Well anyway, good luck with rectifying your posture.
I still haven’t figured out why the guy above me keeps posting everywhere on this site, saying stuff like “thanks for this amazing information post.” I take that back, they call that SPAM. Ha-ha-ha! Dang, you’d think some of these people could at least comment a little less freakin’ spammy for once in their life. Dang! LOL!
