I No Longer Have a ‘Favorite Band’
July 22, 2008 8:36 am Movies, TV and Music
I remember back in high school, I always had a favorite band. For the most part, it was always Queensryche, Dream Theater, Led Zeppelin, or Collective Soul. As you can tell, it would change from time to time.
But just last night my wife and I were talking about music and what my or her favorite band was, and I realized that I don’t have one anymore. I have certain bands that I really like their music, but it’s no longer just one. It’s different types, and it depends on my mood.
So I’m wondering if the whole ‘favorite band’ thing isn’t really just a glorified high school concept. And the more I think about it I would have to say that it is. Instead, it is so much better to just have certain types of music that you like to listen to.
So my advice, don’t limit yourself to one band. Branch out and learn to appreciate other types of music. Though I do have to admit that I can’t find an appreciation for rap, most R&B, or country…

I’m a human encyclopedia of music and bands.
however, I still have a favorite band, and they can do no wrong in my eyes.
It’s not high school, I’m 25, but even though I have 500+ gigs of music, there’s still something about my favorite band that keeps me listening no matter what time of day it is.

I’m pretty sure you hit a certain age and then you no longer need to define yourself by a favourite band! It’s probably around the time you finish college or university and then get a career/business/family etc.

I’m with ya.
I still go through music phases (right now I’m in with Brit bar bands and first wave ska), but I wouldn’t be able to throw down on a fave band anymore.

I definitely need to get a new compressor, but my husband refuses to spend any more money on my car. It’s been 99 degrees here lately so I just don’t leave the house.

it doesnt depend on the age it depends on the person. Some people gravitate towards “favorites” as a way of defining themselves and the world around them. Other people dont like to be defined, and so they label things less. Its not even about the way you think of yourself, its more about the way you think in itself and who you are inside

I think you are on to something there. The whole favorite band thing fades out after high school.
And I think that applies to favorite actors, and favorite movies too.
As you grow you realize your tastes evolve as you are presented with a broader set of choices.

I was just talking about this with my wife. In high school my favorite was Bruce Springsteen. Now I no logner have a favorite either. My tastes are more eclectic and I can usually find something good from pretty much any band and any style of music (except “techno” or “house” music which drives me crazy)

As you get older you choose a style of music that you enjoy listening to rather than whatever your mates are in to or the next big thing.
