I Never Want to Have Surgery
March 18, 2008 10:15 am Random ThoughtsI mentioned last week that my wife was going to have her gallbladder out. This week I’ve been helping her to recover from the surgery and while helping her I’ve come to the conclusion that I never want to have surgery.
In fact, I never want to have to stay in the hospital for anything if I can help it. Now, I’m not saying that if I needed to I wouldn’t go to the hospital. But I plan on staying healthy! To this day I’ve never broken a bone, and really the only reason I have ever gone to the hospital for myself was to have an MRI done on my knee.
Some may say that if you’ve never broken a bone, you’ve never had any real fun. I would have to disagree! Maybe I’ve just been lucky not to have any major injuries. Here are a few example of times I’ve been very lucky:
- Stretched out and almost tore my ACL playing soccer
- Fell off a platform and almost got impaled on a 2 foot wooden stake (just barely missed it)
- Ran into another waverunner with my waverunner on the lake
- Fel into a small snow ravine on a snow mobile (about 5 feet deep is all)
- Numerous wipe outs on water skis and alpine skis
- Hit several curbs driving in the snow
- and more
So I think I’m still having fun. I just don’t like seeing my wife go through this, so I hope that our roles are never switched.

I say don’t listen to those guys who say you’ve never had fun. Serious, why would it ever be fun to break a bone. Now there are things that are fun that can lead to a broken bone, but actually breaking it is in no way fun. You just have to be safe, and you can have the same amount of fun, then more because they are off repairing their broken bone, while you are doing more things.

I know what you mean, hospitals are not on my list of things I want to do in this life time. I do see their place though, I watched them take care of my cousin and my friend better then I ever could. I am just glad there are people who like medicine so I don’t have to

You are right, my first instinct was that you probably never did anything worthwhile but after reading your list of lucky escapes I changed my mind

If I can I also avoid hospitals. Here in Canada sometimes you end up waiting for hours before your turn finally comes at the hospital. You have to really think long and hard before you want to go to the hospital because of the wait.
Anyways, cool site with a good idea.

I hear you on never wanting to have surgery. I just had some dental surgery and it was HORRIBLE. I wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy. Hope your wife has a quick recovery.

I totally know what you mean. Having also never broken a bone or had any serious medical problems, I’ve never had to stay overnight in a hospital. The idea of an extended stay seems horrible to me.

It’s really not as bad as you think. I’ve had 3 surgeries for varies reasons, and while nobody likes hospitals, the experience each time was not as bad as I feared.

It is never fun to have surgery, even if it’s meant to beautify yourself. I’ve had a few done especially one on a torn disc and luckily lived to move my limbs again and telling the tale - it was absolutely terrifying lying in the ops theater before the surgery and not knowing if I would be able to move again when I woke up from the anaesthetic, as you never know an unfortunate slip might happen to you. I hope you and your wife will have continued good health!
