I Could Use a New Bed…

7:18 am Random Gripings

I’m starting to realize that I could really use a new bed.  My wife and I are still sleeping on the same mattress that we bought when we first got married almost 6 years ago.  I guess the normal lifespan of a mattress is supposed to be 10 years or so, but I’m thinking that only counts when you buy a high quality mattress.  Ours doesn’t fit that description!

So now I’m starting to think about some of the options out there.  Here are a couple that I’ve thought of:

  • Sleep number
  • Memory foam mattress
  • Latex mattress

Granted I need to research each of these more, but I’m leaning more towards the Sleep Number or a memory foam mattress.  If anybody has any recommendations, I’d love to hear them!  I guess they all have their benefits and I’ll really need to research them more to decide what to do.  That and save up the money cause the good beds sure are pricey!

Gosh I have never thought about the age of our mattress. I’ve seen the memory foam ones but not sure if they are best. I’ve always heard that it is just best to get a firm one. Let us know what you decide

I have slept on the memory mattress. I didn’t really like it. I do use a memory pillow however. Can’t tell you about the sleep number. I have a relatively inexpensive mattress. I added some foam egg crate looking thingies and a down mattress cover. We love it. Hate getting out of bed in the morning.

If you sweat at night when you sleep or keep your room hot memory foam will not work for you. You cant wash it and you wont like waking up feeling like you just finished a marathon only without the running part.

I’ve got a few friends who swear by
their “Intelligel” beds-say they are the best they’ve ever tried. Warning-be prepared to spend a packet of money-bu I’m told it’s worth it.
Personally, due to back problems and a low budget, I’ve taken to sleeping on the floor-my back has never felt better!
    So there you go-2 options-hope 1 helps!

Ugh, my mattress has not been replaced, nor flipped in a good 10 years. I know nothing about latex mattresses, but my back is not a huge fan of the memory foam. For pillows it is great, not so much for full-body mattressing.

Good luck getting that mattress fast before inflation takes its price through the roof.

Might sound silly but since girlfriend made me buy new bed(I was struggling to avoid that real hard as prices on those she wanted were ridiculous) I realized importance of good mattress. Before that I was inclined to blame sitting behind the computer and lack of movement for all back pain. But shortly after I finally gave up and we got new bed I really felt the difference. So my advice would be save what you can but don’t do it on expense of quality-not worthed in the long run in my opinion.

The BEST mattress I ever purchased was a Kings Down. I bought it back in 1999 and it’s STILL the most comfortable bed I’ve ever had.

If anyone ever sits or “lays” down on my bed, the confirm what I’ve thought the whole time.

I happen to believe that a quality mattress is the best investment anyone can make, as a good nights rest, starts of your day off wonderful.

I agree with J. Nothing beats a memory fan pillow..with a cool pillow case of course.

    HANDS DOWN MEMORY FOAM ROCKS!

    That stuff is wicked

Dont get me wrong sleep number is fancy, but it relys on electronics which can break down and latex… ummm isnt that what condoms are made of because id idnt know they made those in beds….

Memory Foam with some nice egyption cotton sheets and your set :)

Memory foam are great for sleeping on, but they are lousy for the person on the bottom during sex.

A bed should be friendly to our spinal chord. Otherwise, all back pains could have been relieved if we have a spinal-chord friendly bed.

Well,I think it depends on the quality of mattress that you purchased. Choose one that you feel you will be comfortable with.

haha, we once had a bed that was so old that after a night of, ahem, broke beneath us. We had to go out and buy a new one that day.

Not sure about the kind of mattress. But the bed should be easy on the backbone, as whole day a person is working you’re back sure needs it’s rest.

if anybody i looking for a new bed, i recommend asking if any of the floor models are for sale. i got a $1500 mattress for $500. when they switch out new models, they have to get rid of the stuff on the sales floor. i never would have been able to afford a mattress this nice otherwise.

I suggest you buy a new spring mattress. If you use mattress cover in addition.

I would get one of the memory foam beds and pillows.
Also remember to base your sleep around your sleep cycles, try to wake up when you are in light sleep mode (one sleep cycle is an hour and a half, so any multiple of that is fine)

I was in a similar situation three months ago. My wife and I looked at the Sleep Number bed and Tempurpedic. We thought those two were a bit pricey.

I knew I need to make a purchase soon, because I have chronic back pain (due to weight lifting).

Then one day, my wife was out shopping and came across Dormia, a memory form mattress company that sells cheaper mattresses than Tempurpedic.

We decided to purchase the mattress. I am glad we made the choice. I no longer have chronic back pain (sometimes I have a little pain when I lift intensely).

    Here is Dormia’s site. http://www.dormia.com/

Try the ones at Ikea. I bought the Sultan Hasselback last year, and I LOVE it. I bought two other foam mattresses from them, and hated them, returned them with no difficulty, and finally went for the Hasselback. I like Ikea’s mattresses because you do not have to buy a set, just the mattress. They have a good 90 day trial policy and offer a 25 yr warranty. After one year’s use, it is as good as new, and I am very happy with it. Best mattress I ever had.
