How Noisy is the Sun?
April 28, 2008 7:09 am Just Random!
So the other day I was just thinking about random things, and an idea popped into my head that I had never really thought of before: How noisy is the sun?
Think about it…the sun is basically a big explosion going on all the time, so does it make some kind of a giant noise all the time or is it eerily quiet?
Well, being that I am not very scientifically gifted, I decided to pose the question to my brother who is a chemist and teaches at the local university. The answer is that unless you are inside the sun you wouldn’t hear a thing. This is because in space there is no sound; there is no medium for the sound to travel through. So in order to hear the sound of the sun you’d have to be inside of it.
So there is your random science pondering for today. Some of you who are more scientifically inclined might be saying “Well duh!” to this, but I personally never enjoyed science classes in school. Unless we were blowing stuff up…

I was about to say you wouldn’t hear anything because it’s a vacuum. Made me think of the movie Sunshine. It was released last year and is about the sun dying.

That’s a good question! But, doesn’t it need an atmosphere so that sound waves could travel? How would you measure how loud the sound is? Wouldn’t it require a listener? That’s almost like the old question about the sound of one hand clapping…

You know.. I also think a lot about random things. This question however, has never popped into my head, and truthfully.. I would not have known the answer.. Now I do..
