How Noisy is the Sun?
April 28, 2008 7:09 am Just Random!
So the other day I was just thinking about random things, and an idea popped into my head that I had never really thought of before: How noisy is the sun?
Think about it…the sun is basically a big explosion going on all the time, so does it make some kind of a giant noise all the time or is it eerily quiet?
Well, being that I am not very scientifically gifted, I decided to pose the question to my brother who is a chemist and teaches at the local university. The answer is that unless you are inside the sun you wouldn’t hear a thing. This is because in space there is no sound; there is no medium for the sound to travel through. So in order to hear the sound of the sun you’d have to be inside of it.
So there is your random science pondering for today. Some of you who are more scientifically inclined might be saying “Well duh!” to this, but I personally never enjoyed science classes in school. Unless we were blowing stuff up…

I was about to say you wouldn’t hear anything because it’s a vacuum. Made me think of the movie Sunshine. It was released last year and is about the sun dying.

That’s a good question! But, doesn’t it need an atmosphere so that sound waves could travel? How would you measure how loud the sound is? Wouldn’t it require a listener? That’s almost like the old question about the sound of one hand clapping…

You know.. I also think a lot about random things. This question however, has never popped into my head, and truthfully.. I would not have known the answer.. Now I do..

This question was just recently asked in my astronomy class. I’m no scientist, but I thought this would be an interesting course for an elective since I don’t like biology or chemistry. Anyways, the explanation you gave is exactly what our professor said. Great random article, things like this create a learning opportunity for others.

How noisy is the Sun? Now that was an interesting question. If we were able to hear it, I’m sure it would be deafening, but as you say, there’s no medium for sound to travel between the empty ares between stars and planets. I researched over some lunar myths & folklore before, but I haven’t put a lot of research into the sun.
Just do a web search with the terms “How loud is the sun?” and you’ll find other people wondering about this subject, as well.

I’ve never wondered how noisy the sun was, just always knew that sucker was really hot!
That reminds me, did anyone else see that silly video where some guy said there was a cloaked UFO full of aliens hanging out by planet Mercury? Ha! Seriously, the guy said the solar flares from the sun temporarily uncloaked it on some NASA video or whatever. It was big on YouTube a couple weeks ago, and I thought it was funny. I mean really, what would aliens in a spaceship be doing by that heated rock of a planet? Anyway, this sun-related post reminded me of that.
Well, I have some sexy image galleries to build…. featuring hot babes, bikinis, lingerie, and glamour models. All this solar heat and noise from this post has me ready to start working on some of my own; cheers!
