Going Over On Cell Phone Minutes

4:47 pm Random Gripings

I went over on my cell phone minutes again this month!  I really wish that there was a better way to handle the whole cell phone thing, cause man do they slap you when you go over!

My big problem right now is that we don’t use a home phone.  We just use our cells for everything and so far it’s worked out really well.  But lately my wife has had to make a lot of calls to doctors offices and places like that.  And you know what that means…they put you on hold forever!

I’m starting to wonder if the doctor’s offices and cell phone companies and in cahoots with each other…maybe when you call in on a cell phone they purposefully put you on hold just so they can collect on the overage you have to pay for your minutes.  Ok probably not, but it makes you wonder sometimes!

Cell phone charges drive me crazy, best things I’ve seen to deal with them is.

I use to have Nextel, which had free out going calls.

Now I have AT&T, with free M to M, so I can talk to friends and family for free.

That doesn’t solve the Doctor wait issue though. I just hope I save up enough minutes with my free M to M to have enough for situations like that.

Its amazing how many people use their cells phones as their home phones these days. Technology has really changed the world

I think there are potentially 2 solutions for your problem though. One is something called a hotspot at home. I dont actually know very much about it but I think some cell phone companies let you use your wireless internet to make free calls from home.

The other is this as seen on tv thing i saw the other day. Its basically a little thing that plugs into your computer, and they claim you can use it to make calls anywhere in the us for like $20 a year.

I don’t know if either of those things are for real, but even something as simple as skype can save you a few bucks

Just a few thoughts on how to avoid overages from long waits on hold

I am pretty much the opposite. I have had the lowest minute plan ( now its either 400 or 450) for my carrier for ages. I average about 80-90 minutes a month. And I dont use the home phone either. I think its because I do most of my calling on the weekends or nights. Then there is email ( I never call if an email will do) and text messaging. Off course, I can see needing to call doctors is a whole different thing. maybe I have been lucky with that.

You may want to consider bumping to the next level plan or going with an unlimited plan. Of course that depends on a lot like how often you go voer and by how much. Only thing I ever went over was on text messages- so I bumped up my plan on that ( was like $5 to save 20 bucks in my case).

i used to go over my cell phone minutes constantly until i made a smart decision… i switched to T-Mobile and got their Regional Plan that includes 3000 minutes for $49.99 a month. The only downside is you dont get long distance but rarely the state unfortunately

Good advice. Get Skype. When your minute cell phone minutes are finished, use Skyped.
