Going Off Candy!
January 2, 2008 3:00 pm Food
Ok, so one of my themes this year is to get in the best shape of my life. So as one of the goals that will move me towards that end I’m going off candy. Honestly, my wife and I have made this decision several times in the last couple of years. I think the best we ever did was 5 months. Our current goal is to go for the next 3 months.
So here’s the plan:
- no buying extra junk food candy for myself at any time in the next 3 months
- if there is cake at a family party, eat in moderation (no seconds, and only small portions!)
- I’m also going to cut out non-diet soft drinks (unless I just have to get some caffeine to keep going - the subplan there is to get enough sleep so this isn’t a problem)
It’s a simple thing really, and after all of the junk that I ate the last two weeks I’m very encouraged to make this step. Anyone else want to join in the fun?
This is quite the change for me, and I’m planning on making it a long term change this time. In high school it was very common for me to eat a pound of skittles a week. You think I’d get sick of them, but they are still my favorite candy. But I’m willing to give them up!

That is funny. This is practically the same resolution my husband and I have. We have vowed to not buy any more junk to force us to eat the apples and oranges in the fridge. And we also quit buying sodas. Good luck to you!

Nice thought. We have decided to something similar this year as well.

Hi,
Sugar cravings can also be a sign of a nutritional deficiency.
Probably, you are low on magnesium because you crave chocolate, candy and other sweets.
Zinc and chromium can also stave off sugar cravings.
Don’t you take good multivitamin supplement with these minerals?
Check great site http://www.Atkins-Diets.info especially
article “Atkins and Sugar Craving”.
You will find very useful advice there

The way i do it is to calculate the amount of exercise it would take to burn of the calories. A blueberry muffin (1.5 oz) that’s like 39 mins of walking at 3 mph of 23 mins of jogging at 5mph - yikes hand me the celery

I used to say that sugar and sweets are evil
Stay away from them. Eat fruits and vegetables

Sugar is just very addicting. I just always have to plan for the huge loss of energy and potential headaches when coming off of it. After a good week or so it’s over and I end up with more consistent energy and none of the sugar lows or headaches that come after a sugar high.

My wife decided she wanted to quit eating chocolate. Trouble is she kept saying ‘OK, this is the last day I’ll be eating it’….and she said that every day!

HAH, some idea of “fun”! Sorry, you’re on your own, I have to have at least one addiction :o) Good luck!

Good plan, once you get use to it then something with lots of sugar tends to taste too sweet.

I am sure you will loose atleast 5 lbs by cutting non-diet soft drinks. I stopped drinking these soft drinks for 2 months and I had a remarkable difference in my shape.
Good luck to you!

Great work….i’m going to stop buying junk foods and make my body very slim

I moved over to Coke Zero and have found that to be a smart move.

I just quit smokeing and have gained a bunch of weight, my new years resolution is to start smoking again

I started NY with lots of chocolate, chips and Coke… although my resolution includes getting proper healthy food and nutritious food.
Maybe putting the limit like 3 or 5 months could be good idea. hmm…

I’m on sort of the same kick. Soft drinks like Mountain Dew are a real problem for me. I swear they put something in those things that is addictive. I can’t give them up cold turkey but I have resigned to at least cut down and when I do have one only have a small one. This alone will cut a lot of calories out of my diet.

This is a great decision you have taken. America has a long life expectancy but the twilight years are spent on doctors apponintments or even worse, in pain.
But there is usually a big problem in making a decision to get healthy and that is, we are rarelly sold to the idea. If one is not fully, wholly and completely sold to the benefits of health decision and still find these decisions as denial of some nice thing (candy in your case) it becomes difficult to see this decision through a lifetime.
One way of getting sold is getting better informed, more often and very regulary.

Yea it is tough. If you don’t think you are addicted to sugar, try going without it. Eating some fruit every time I have the urge to eat candy always takes the edge off.

ah, but junkfood i love - i can’t get enough of those every day
i need a packet a day or else i’ll frown

This is a great resolution…I tried this but I couldn’t go off candy all together I just limited my weekly candy bar to 1…so far so good!

Nice, good choice to make. I’m trying a similar thing this year.
I started playing WoW last year and it resulted in my gaining a ton of wait.
Replaced WoW with DDR, and reduced the cokes.
I personally like Coke Zero with Cherry. I personally HATE diet type cokes, but the cherry really helps. Give it a try.

Don’t buy it and you won’t eat it! It’s really that simple. Don’t have access to it and you will not eat.

It is the right move. Congrats on your decision.

Good luck with it - I never had the mental strength to make it last…

You should cut off the coffee too. It ain’t doing you no good. This therapy in group is working much better than doing it all alone. I asked my boyfriend to stop eating after six and to work some abs. He’s looking much better now, and that’s great.

first off, kudos to you for taking that first step towards
‘living healthy’… for many the hardest part is finally
taking the plunge… now that your in that ‘place’, i would
like to make some suggestions, as a substitute for the
’sweets’, you may try eating naturally sweet fruits, like
apples, strawberries, mangoes etc… also, you may encounter
bumps along the way, so to prevent you from getting back to
your old habit, you can try setting a special date where you
can eat ’some’ sweets… the idea is not to resist your
sweet cravings but to control it… its also that you are
sharing this experience to everybody, its absolutely
motivating when people are watching! also, in the future,
you may want to check out different diet plans, to
further your pursuit for a healthier life! good luck and
keep us posted!!

I’ve tried a method where you put yourself on a strict diet 6 days a week, but allow yourself to eat whatever you want one day out of each week. The idea is that there is only so much bad stuff the body can absorb at one time, so it’s better to eat 3 pizzas in one day, than half a pizza everyday. It certainly worked for me.

Good observation, Ghettodefender!
And I think any American city would be just as risky, so that it was Chicago is beside the point, imo.
Hmmm

I disagree with Valeri. I think that it is worth its weight now matter how much it costs. Being one up on the next guy always has a price tag, but truthfully, its invaluable. Well put, btw.
