Getting Excited for May

9:50 am Random Observations

May is looking to start of really well. Ok ok, I know that it isn’t even half way through March and I’m already thinking about May.  Well, March has annoyed me so far and so I’m looking forward to a month that seems to be more comfortable with itself.

So the reason that I’m excited for May is because my wife and I are making a trip down to Oceanside to learn how to surf!  It was her idea originally.  She used to spend all of her summers in California and really misses the beach, so this was a great way to get us both motivated to go down there.

I honestly have no idea what surfing is going to be like. I’ve done a little boogie boarding before, but I wasn’t any good at it.  The most water sport experience I have is water skiing behind a boat.  But either way, I’m excited and it should be a lot of fun!

Sounds great. You may find you need a lot of patience, ironically. My one and only surfing experience, in the relatively calm waters of touristy Oahu, was a lot of waiting on the board for the waves to come in. And when the waves came, there was a lot of scrambling to catch the wave, which usually ended in half success. So alternating cycles of peaceful waiting and then frenzied action.

I came across this post when searching for some surf-related hotel offerings.

One tip - you may want to get refamiliarized with pushups if you haven’t done them lately. You can even do the knee-only ones. The key is the “pop up” once you’ve caught the wave, and having strong pecs & shoulders will help you have a shorter burst to stand, than a struggle to stand.

Oh yeah, it’ll help with paddling too. ;-)

Respect the enjoy, and enjoy. I’m jealous!

Have a great vacation - I’ve lived in So Cal all my life - usually within 10 minutes from the water. I tried to learn to surf on my own several times - the last time was in college with a trip to the Emergency room - learn from a pro is my advice… or do what I did and take up fly fishing : )

Sounds like it’ll be a great experience! I always wanted to surf but never got around to it for some reason. I’m not exactly a spring chicken so this has inspired me make preliminary plans to take a summer vacation to southern California. You only live once (supposedly)!

Surfing is really hard in my opinion, tried it a few times. Snowboarding is way easier:-), so I stick with that.

Ah, I love California…but I live in Sacramento, lol

I plan on moving to SoCal in 2 years. I miss being near the warm beaches, like when I lived in Miami, FL.
