Dashing Through the Snow….And Spinning Off the Road…
January 9, 2008 8:16 am Random Observations
So today was probably the second big storm of the season here in Utah. And once again while I was driving in to work I noticed at least 5 cars that were spun out on the side of the road. At least this time I didn’t see any damage to my complex
.
I thought it might be a good idea to give all of you a few safe driving tips for driving in the snow. Granted, I am no professional driver or anything, but most of these should be common sense. But then again, is common sense isn’t all that common it seems. But hey, I can even include myself in that sometimes. Anyway, I digress. So here are some tips:
- Drive slower than you think you should be. Its better to get there let than not get there at all.
- Don’t hit your breaks on the freeway!!! You wanna spin out? Hitting your breaks is a great way to lose control.
- Keep good distance from other cars.
- When turning, give yourself plenty of time to make the turn in case you wheels get spinning
Ok, this is definitely not an all inclusive list, but if everyone would keep these simple things in mind I think we’d see a lot less accidents on the road because of snow. Granted, sometimes things just spin out of your control and there isn’t much you can do. But those situations are normally the exception.
Happy Safe Snow Driving!

Wow! I’m down in Vegas and that sort of weather just seems unreal. I hope you stay safe and warm

Yup all good advice, just ease off the gas on the freeway dont just brake hard!

Safety first!!! Everyone should take precaution when they drive. What’s more when it snows or rains.

Good advice. Snow and Ice are treacherous. Once you’re spinning there’s no getting it back so drive with care and at a good following distance.

there’s one time where i was on vacationing in a country which has snow - my rented car spun 360 degrees twice!! luckily there was just minor bumps, the insurance took care of it of course

Just seeing the picture gives me goose bumps. I’m so happy that I left my cold country of origin (Germany) for good, even though it doesn’t give so much snow anymore the last few years.
Countries around the equator are so much more preferable.

Drive slow in the snow. Also, carry chains that fit. Never know when you’ll need them.

As a fellow Utahan having to drive in these less than ideal conditions, may I add a tip? Big trucks must slow down in the snow just like everyone else. The only difference between a big truck braking fast and a small car braking fast is that the truck will do more damage to whatever it runs into. Four wheel drive does not mean invincible drive.
Anyway, thanks for letting me add my two cents.

“Keep good distance from other cars.”
I think that’s the main one right there. After seeing so many other people crach into one another, I really try to give a decent distance from the car ahead of me. It’s good to check your rear view mirror from time to time to see if someone is tailgating you. If they are I usually switch lanes. When there is snow on the ground you really have to be a good deffensive driver.

You should definitely pay more attention and slow down while driving in those conditions.
