Christmas is On It’s Way - Where’s the Music?
November 19, 2008 9:27 am Random Observations
I may have blogged about this last year, but have you noticed that in recent years you start to hear Christmas music earlier and earlier in the season? It seems like last year I was hearing it in late October!
This year though I haven’t noticed it as much. Not sure why though… are we all becoming a bunch of scrooges or something?
So when is it too early to start playing Christmas music? Personally, I prefer to not start playing it until after Thanksgiving. I think this is out of respect for Thanksgiving since it kind of gets over looked in that sense. Speaking of which, is there such a thing as a Thanksgiving song? There are lots of Halloween songs and Christmas songs, but are there any for Thanksgiving?
Now I do have to admit that on Nov 1 I got in my wife’s car and one of her preset radio stations was already playing Christmas music. It caught me by surprise! But it doesn’t seem as prevalent this year. Not sure why…

I agree, most of the new Christmas music is LAME to say the least!

After you’ve worked retail during the holidays, the endearing quality of holiday music simply vanishes. Anytime is too early for Christmas for me. Bah Humbag.

You know, I can completely understand that. When you hear nothing but Christmas music all day long I’m sure it’s the last thing you want to listen to at any other time

I always find that they start with all the Christmas stuff too early, it has become so promotional, the earlier it starts, the more money they make.

And you know that they all especially need it this year!

I love Christmas music and always feel that we don’t get enough of that. This year I will be playing it earlier. However, I can understand that if you work retail and have to listen to the same stuff day in and day out, it will get to be a bit much!

I feel the same way. If you work retail I’m sure it gets pretty old.

Up here in Alberta, Canada, they started playing Christmas music the day after Halloween. Now that is too early! The cashiers and other workers already looked tired of it.

That’s what they usually do here as well, but I haven’t noticed it as much this year. It’s starting to become more obvious now though.

The credit crunch has made people less interested in the commercial aspect of Christmas, and the ONLY reason Christmas decorations have gone up earlier and earlier each year is to do with commerce. So now we are in a recession, Christmas has become something businesses are less interested in promoting.

But don’t you think they would promote it even more to increase sales? It seems a little backwards not to promote it.

I started hearing Christmas Music on TV. I think people is no longer interested in this holidays now.

I wouldn’t go that far, but I do agree that a lot are probably less excited about it.

It is the same here in Chicago- Christmas music starts playing earlier and earlier,so is the merchandise. It starts poping up in late October which is crazy. This way there is nothing holy about it

A party would be pretty lame without music, that’s for sure!

I’ve just started hearing Christmas music. And I’m so glad. I think it ruins it when you start hearing it in October. It’s not even cold around here in NC in October.

I was working on my blog on the same subject. Its nice to see that I am not the only on that finds it… well taxing on the nerves to think about Christmas in October/ November.

Well, we started hearing Christmas adverts here in the UK about a month ago! I prefer not to hear it until December - otherwise we become immune to the true spirit of Christmas.
