Chinese Massage Balls - Love ‘em!
May 8, 2008 2:37 pm Just Random!
Ok, I think that they might be technically called ‘chime balls’ or something like that. But either way I think they’re awesome! I remember when I first saw these things I really didn’t understand what they were for. In fact, I remember as a kid just holding one in each hand and listening to them make all sorts of noise. I thought they were pretty cool…
Lately I’ve been using these in one hand as I’m talking to a client. And they really are relaxing to use. I’ve even heard that they can help with carpal tunnel as well, and with as much as I’m on the computer that’s a good thing.
Now here’s my big question on these things: is it better to rotate them so the balls don’t touch, or just let them rub together as you turn them in your hand? I usually just let them rub together, but I’ve always wondered about that.
If anyone knows the answer, feel free to share.
Maybe they have different levels of difficulty or something. Maybe if I can do it as fast without touching as I can with them touching I’ll automatically become some sort of zen master! Ok, probably not…

I say it only matters which approach makes you happy and is relaxing. That’s the whole idea with mindful exercises like Chinese Massage balls, right? If it’s not considered a form of meditation, I think it should be.

I used to get cramps in my hands, so my wife bought me some chinese massage balls. I use them all the time now and I’ve definitely noticed the difference.
Getting them to stop touching is waaaay too difficult for me (I’m trying to avoid this sounding rude, but I think I’m failing miserably!)

I actually use these to help out with my Carpal Tunnel. My doctor said it would be a good idea because I’m at the computer all day as well!

Another good thing to use that is good for your wrists are gyro balls. They are fun but they might make too much noise while talking to a client.

This is from a good source for massage therapists:
Hand & Wrist Strengthening Exercises
1. Chinese Hand Balls (Bao Ding balls in Chinese)
Chinese hand balls (sometimes called Chinese health balls or qi gong balls) have a long history in China.
They are available in various sizes and are made of different materials such as steel, bronze, jade, glass and marble.
How
Stand or sit. Hold the balls in one hand. Keep your forearm parallel to the ground.
Beginners usually start with two balls. Once you become more adept it’s possible to rotate 4, 6, or more balls in one hand.
Use your fingers to move the balls around your palm, first one way then the other.
Initially this may be difficult, however with practice you’ll be able to rotate them smoothly and quickly.
The balls should stay in constant touch, and not bang against each other.
Feel your hands and fingers warming up.
A couple of minutes per hand is enough to start.
Benefits
Stretches & tones your hand & arm tendons
Stimulates important energy meridians in your hands
Improves strength, coordination & dexterity in your hands & forearms
Highly relaxing - good for chronic worriers & over-thinkers
Excellent warm-up before activities involving your hands & forearms
Highly therapeutic for anyone with arthritic or rheumatic finger or wrist joints
Tips
Don’t overdo it at first - 1 or 2 minutes per hand is enough
Don’t practice over hard surfaces - the balls easily break
Take a set of hand balls when traveling or to work

you’re not massaging the ball, you roll the balls in your hand to massage your hand.

I am curious as to what is inside these things. Has anyone ever taken one apart to see what makes the chiming sound?

My friend plays the guitar and often complained about his hand. I recommended these balls and now he swears by them, so go figure.

Chinese Massage Balls sounds quite interesting. I don’t think balls rub together will make any difference. As you rotate or roll it over your hand proper blood circulation will be there.
[Reply]
I don’t think it matters whether the balls touch or not as you roll them around. Seems like you would need pretty large hands in order to prevent the balls from touching.

I actually use these to help out with my Carpal Tunnel.

The Chinese Massage Balls are great for low-impact stress relief, but if you’re feeling extra tense or frustrated, I’d recommend the “Captains of Crush Hand Grippers.” Squeezing on hand grips, at least to me, works better. Cheers!

Chinese Massage Balls are great for stress relief and also provide a little exercise for those forearm flexors and extensors. Personally, I still favor hand grippers, as they work ya out better - especially if you choose the “Captains of Crush” brand…

As some of the working stiffs out there who are living a mundane life full of routines and hectic chaos should know, these Chinese balls are sure to help combat stress and help a person through the daily hassles of life. However, I prefer lifting weights and beating the hell out of punching bags, but a little hand and wrist exercise never hurts… ha!
