Be Safe This Coming Boating Season
March 13, 2009 9:56 am Just Random! So I talked recently about how I’m excited for the summer (or at least May) because of the trip my wife and I are making to California. Well, back when I was growing up I was always excited for summer because each year we would go boating!
Seriously, every year for about 11-13 years growing up we would make trips down to Lake Powell which is on the border of Utah and Arizona. Great place to go for a vacation if you’ve never been.
The sad thing is that some people head down there to party and then make some really dumb decisions. For example, drinking while boating. Just like drinking and then driving a car, Boating and Alcohol Don’t Mix.
Sure, you may think that you’re safe because you’re on water and not on asphault, but you can still make some really stupid decisions if you’re boating while drinking and either kill yourself, your buddies, or other innocent boaters near you.
So please, if you’re going to go boating or anything else, be safe and don’t drink and operate a vehicle whether it be a car, boat, or anything else.
Here’s a video from the Arizona Game and Fish Department that talks about the dangers of boating while under the influence of alcohol.

Nice post. I’ve been a life long fan of travel. Being safe is huge, even if you’re the more adventurous type. Thanks for the video. Stupidity, morons, and beer. Scary combination.

That is such a funny video. Good thing that there are people out there like that so we can get a good laugh.

If this could only be true - I think it is so sad when people get drunk and then hurt innocent people just to have a good time.

Nice post! really funny video. thanks!

A lot of people out on Lake Michigan think it’s okay to drink and boat. Every year the lake takes so many people due to this and people still drink and boat. It’s illegal and it’s stupid.

I wish this would make a difference however I think drinking and driving is not planned is just happens. So not sure if it would work but hope it will.

Drinking and boating, sounds like fun.

Don’t drink and drive applies to any type of moving vehicle. Even bicycles, I’ve seen plenty of people riding bicycles while under the influence. They don’t want to risk DUI so they ride a bicycle. Cops over here in Philadelphia do ticket people for riding bikes while drunk.

Lake Powell is the great place and I have definitely seem some crazy stuff happen down there. Good advice to stay safe.

It would be stupid to drink and drive because lives are at risk.
Where i live are too many drivers and boat owners who think it is cool to drink while operating a vehicle. They are just so stupid.

Funny Video But its not advisable to try such things without precautions

you should totally go to lake powell instead - great fly fishing in Lee’s Ferry

Yeah, this is a great point. Drinking while basically doing ANYTHING but sitting still will vastly increase your chance for injury, and drinking while boating is nearly just as bad as doing it while driving. You could very easily be killed.
[Reply]
Here’s the thing, when you drink you really shouldn’t operate any heavy machinery…so that includes boats.
I think it’s crazy how some people choose to ignore that simple warning about operating heavy machinery!!

true, Drinking and going for boating is as dangerous as drinking and driving. We should risk our precious lives like this. thanks for the post!

Lake Pleasant! I go there all the time in the summer and enjoy my friend’s house boat. Beautiful place and yes the Sheriff is out in force all the time.

I can’t wait to go boating this summer, too! It’s one of the things I look forward to most every year. Thank you for posting about the dangers of drinking and boating.

I noticed there is an article about safer boating also at http://www.okobojiville.com - good things to remember for the upcoming season!

I agree with you. A lake in Michigan I go to often recently had somebody get killed from a drinking and boating incident. The person on the boat ran over somebody who was tubing. Tragic indeed.

funny how people would even think it’s ok to drink and drive a boat when they wouldn’t dream of doing it in a car. the video is hilarious

Can’t wait to enjoy the great weather here in AZ on the water! Thanks for the post!

It would be smart to be sober on the boat and drink once on the ground. The reverse… not a good idea!

My Mother was hit by a drunk driver when she was young and it crushed her ankles and has affected her health her whole life. Don’t Drink and Drive!

I have a heartbreaking story to tell about the affects of boating under the influence. A couple years ago at a popular lake near where I live a man had been drinking heavily and decided to go boating with his 3 year old son.
He placed his son in too large of a life jacket for his size and then proceeded to tow him behind the boat on a tube (The child was by himself mind you).
The man was going roughly 30 miles an hour and the child fell off the tube and out of his life jacket and the man did not notice that his son had fallen off the tube.
The child drowned and his body was never recovered from the lake. So please, if you are going to go boating, don’t drink alcohol while you are boating. They don’t go together!
