An Education Program That Makes a lot of Sense!
March 26, 2008 6:46 am GeneralOne problem that I’ve had with the current higher education system is that it doesn’t offer a lot of (if any) real world experience while you’re going through getting an ‘education.’ I always had this thought of some kid going through college working at some fast food joint, but then when he gets out of college he has no real work experience to draw on when applying for jobs. Not a good picture!
Well I just recently heard about a much better idea - co-op education! The idea is that you work for a couple of months in a company related to what you’re studying, then you go back to school for 3 months and so forth. So you learn the stuff in school, then go apply it in the real world immediately. This is great!
Right now number one ranked university with co-op programs is Kettering University. They offer a lot of programs such as engineering co-op programs for students studying industrial engineering, and many other programs as well. In fact, US News and World Report has ranked Kettering University as “the #1 University in the nation for Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering” in its annual “America’s Best Colleges Guide for 2008″. This is definitely worth checking out if you’re thinking of going back to school or have kids getting ready for college.

It is true though, a big part of Post Secondary eduction should be about real life and related work experience. In many industries, it’s an employer’s market, meaning employers can demand more from experience and qualifications for prospective employees, and still get enough applications to fill the role.

I have to admit, this sounds like a very good program I did elem. ed. in college, and they do have time for the students to spend putting their experience to work in an actual classroom with real kids. However, this does not come until the end-by then it was just too late to graduate in something else, even though I did not enjoy teaching. *Sigh.*

I think there`s a lot of university have that system of education nowadays. It gives benefit to both side, student and the company itself. Because it will reduce the cost of labour, while the student can gain more experience. However it was time limited and maybe the supervisor not really have to time to teach everything to the student, so its up to this student to grab any chance available.

I totally agre with your article.co-op programs are ideal for students in college on the basis that jobs are being taken by more experienced individuals.the fact that when an employer sees that you have no work in the the field that you aced in the psition will go to some old guy who did that kind of work for 10 years.

I think increasingly we’re going to get away from the bankrupt 4-year model that has lower-middle-class kids turning into indentured servants with 100K debt loads en masse. I’m all for alternate forms of higher education so everyone has a chance at contributing more to society in a way that is sustainable.

This is a very interesting article especially coop education, which is the first time I ever heard of. I am now working my ass of paying my tuition fees. Should have known of it earlier. Good work with your blog.

Its true that many of the college students after finishing their college studies don’t know where to find the job. This Kettering University would be really useful one for such peoples.

Co-op programs are a great option. Not only do they get you real-world experience, they enhance your education and can pay pretty well. I’m definitely going to sign up for one.

So basically you’re talking about doing internship in a company to be professional in your field of study, right?

Superb, that surely sounds like imparting a practical education, adding intelligence and professional value.

I have a few friends who did this in college and it seemed pretty great. They were earning very good money, getting their coursework done, and had a job waiting for them after they graduated. With today’s economy and so many fresh graduates unable to find employment I think co-ops provide students a secure spot in an industry.
