Allergies are Not My Friend…
September 26, 2008 4:33 pm Random Gripings
So at some point this week my allergies hit again. I just have your common seasonal allergies, and they seem to hit me at the beginning and the end of the season. But this time they decided to turn into a head cold as well!
Honestly, I don’t understand allergies at all. I don’t believe in evolution really (the whole we came from monkies thing doesn’t work for me), but for those that do believe in this how do they explain allergies? If we really do evolve, wouldn’t we have gotten used to all the pollen and other stuff in the air by now?
For example, my son is highly allergic to cashews. Shouldn’t evolution have taken care of that one? I’d like someone who is an evolutionist to explain this one to me! I’d love to hear some good ideas on this, cause I’m at a loss.
I also hate it when they turn into a head cold. I was so stuffed up last night…no wonder my wife didn’t get much sleep! I had Nyquil to knock me out, but otherwise I’m sure I would have been blowing my nose all night.
Which brings up another question…how in the world does the nose generate that much snot?! I mean seriously, who turned on that faucet and left it running!
Anyway, this is more of a rant and gripe, but I don’t feel good. And by the way, no this is not a picture of me up above.
I hope you all have a nice weekend!

I’m not a biologist or anything like that, but I’ve heard some explanations in the course of my schooling. Allergies are a function of the immune system, and the immune system is a learning apparatus that gauges potential biological threat and induces inflammatory responses in response to those threats. At various points during the individual’s development, there are opportunities for the immune system to sort of accidentally tag the wrong proteins as offenders, and to then create inflammatory responses that are way out of proportion. So, in answer to your question, I think that allergies are an example of a biological function that can harm or even kill a single individual, yet survives because it is generally protective for the species as a whole.

Wow, you definitely know more about this than I do. That’s really interesting stuff, thanks for sharing!

Taking a claritin in the morning would be helpful. Also, I hear allergies can be caused by dust in your room. I saw some product on TV (an informercial) that there are products that can clean the dust mites from your beds, called a TOBI (Tobidirect.com) I also hear that a Kirby Vacuum cleaner can cleaner better than traditional cleaners.

It’s funny you mention Claritin, I actually take the generic version all the time. Sometimes it works great, some days not so well

Tell me about it! I seem to get colds in the spring and the autumn. I never get ill in the summer or the winter though?
I too have never undertood why we haven’t evolved out of food alergies, maybe some people just don’t develop the resistence or something?
Trevor.

I honestly wonder if it’s something to do with all the extra chemicals and processes we use…but who knows!

I would think of allergies as our body’s way of defending itself. For example, if the weather changes drastically from cold to hot and vice versa, most people will have allergies and headache. Different people are allergic to different things, maybe that’s what make us unique? But I agree, we should have evolved and be resistant to the pollen in the air…
